Datto RMM Agent not running after upgrading to macOS 27 (Golden Gate)

On Apple silicon Macs, upgrading to macOS 27 (Golden Gate) removes Rosetta 2, which causes the Datto RMM Agent to stop running silently. This article explains how to reinstall Rosetta 2 manually to restore Agent connectivity.

IMPORTANT  A native Apple silicon Agent is planned for Datto RMM 15.2 (targeted for early October 2026). Once your instance is upgraded to 15.2, the macOS Agent will run natively on Apple silicon and will no longer require Rosetta 2. Follow the steps below as the recommended fix in the meantime.

Problem statement

On Apple silicon Macs (M1 and later), the Datto RMM Agent depends on Rosetta 2, Apple's compatibility layer that allows Intel-built software to run on Apple silicon hardware. When a Mac is upgraded to macOS 27 (Golden Gate), the upgrade process removes Rosetta 2 by default. Although macOS 27 fully supports Rosetta 2, it does not preserve the installation across an Operating System (OS) upgrade, so Rosetta 2 must be reinstalled afterwards.

Under normal circumstances, macOS offers to install Rosetta 2 automatically the first time you open an app that requires it. However, Apple removed that automatic prompt in early versions of macOS 27, and background system services never trigger the prompt in the first place.

Because the Datto RMM Agent runs as a background service, it will silently fail to start after the upgrade to macOS 27. The result is that the Datto RMM icon disappears from the menu bar and the device stops reporting in to your IT provider, typically within minutes of the macOS 27 upgrade completing.

Resolution

Before following these steps, confirm that both of the following are true:

  • The Datto RMM icon is no longer visible in the macOS menu bar.
  • The device stopped checking in with your IT provider shortly after the macOS 27 upgrade.

To resolve this issue, complete the following steps:

  1. Open Terminal. You can find it in Applications > Utilities, or search for it using Spotlight (press Command (⌘) + Space and type Terminal).
  2. Type the following command exactly as shown, then press Return:

    softwareupdate --install-rosetta --agree-to-license

  3. Wait for Rosetta 2 to download and install. This typically takes under a minute. When the command prompt returns to a normal line, the installation is complete.

Rosetta 2 requires no additional configuration after installation. The Datto RMM Agent service should start on its own within a few minutes. To confirm the Agent has recovered, check that the Datto RMM icon reappears in your menu bar, or ask your IT provider to confirm the device is checking in again.

If the Agent does not recover after 5–10 minutes, restart the Mac. This prompts the Agent service to start cleanly. If the device is still not reporting in after restarting, you should review device permissions. Datto RMM should have Full Disk Access, Accessibility, and Screen Recording permissions under System Settings > Privacy & Security on macOS devices. If the Agent still does not connect, follow the troubleshooting steps in The Datto RMM Agent is offline.

Tips and tricks

Until you upgrade to Datto RMM 15.2, you can handle this issue across your Apple silicon fleet by configuring the following command to run on each macOS device once it has been updated to macOS 27:

softwareupdate --install-rosetta --agree-to-license

Building the Rosetta 2 reinstall into your upgrade process restores the Datto RMM Agent as part of the rollout, so you avoid troubleshooting each machine individually after upgrading.
