How is the manufacturer automatically determined for a network device?
Answer
For SNMP-enabled network devices, the Manufacturer field on the device summary page displays the manufacturer of the device. This data is pulled via SNMP using the mechanism described in this article.
Determining the manufacturer
- When the SNMP-enabled device is audited by the network node, Datto RMM pulls the Object ID from the following OID:
1.3.6.1.2.1.1.2.0
- A value similar to the following should be returned:
1.3.6.1.4.1.24681
- Datto RMM then determines the manufacturer based on the number following
1.3.6.1.4.1
(24681
in this example).
For this example, Datto RMM would return QNAP SYSTEMS, INC as the manufacturer. Refer to this table.
Testing
To confirm the value returned to the platform is correct:
- Connect to the network node via the Datto RMM Agent Browser.
- Open the SNMP Test Tool and enter the information for the SNMP-enabled device. Refer to Test SNMP monitoring in the Agent Browser.
- Add a test monitor for the OID:
1.3.6.1.2.1.1.2.0.
- In this table, search for the value returned.
