Best practices for website monitoring

As an MSP, you may need to verify a website is available and that the SSL certificate is valid. You can use Datto RMM to perform certain checks against various websites using our built-in components.

  1. In the ComStore, search for the following two components and click Add for each:
    • Website Checker [WIN]
    • Domain Name SSL Certificate Expiry Check [WIN]
  2. Refer to ComStore.

IMPORTANT  You must assign these monitors directly to a device and choose a device that is not hosting the website you are checking.

  3. Select the device you wish to use to run the website checks from. Refer to Devices.
  4. Navigate to the device's Monitors card. Refer to Monitors in Device summary.
  5. Click Create a Monitor.
  6. In the Monitor Type section, click Select.
  7. In the Select a Monitor pane, select Component.
  8. In the Alert section, click Select a Component Monitor.
  9. Select the Website Checker [WIN] component.
  10. Set the string you are looking for on the website and the URL to check. Then, set the frequency at which you wish to execute the monitor and any response actions (create a ticket in Autotask, send an email, and so forth).
  11. Next, repeat steps 4 through 8 to configure the second monitoring component: Domain Name SSL Certificate Expiry Check [WIN].
  12. As required, set the expiry check value, the URL, and any response options. Optionally, you can check for latency, add a ping monitor to the device, add the IP address of the site you are checking, and configure the round-trip latency value.

You can now verify that a site is up, returning the expected page, and responding in a timely manner.
