Lengthy Windows 7 updates and audits
Issue
During the management of a Windows 7 SP1 endpoint, you notice that downloading updates to the machine and running an audit take a long time. You might also notice that the endpoint's filters and monitors do not work as expected.
Cause
The Windows Update Bugfix Rollup for Windows 7 SP1 component is not installed on the endpoint. If the installation of this update is pending, it can cause auditing, updating, and reporting to stall.
Resolution
You can download the component from the ComStore to resolve this issue. You can deploy the component through a job, or you can install it manually.
NOTE Both processes require a reboot of the endpoint for the fixes to take effect.
The following procedures are fixes for post-deployment installations of Windows 7 SP1 and the Datto RMM Agent. To mitigate these issues before installing Windows, you can slipstream the convenience roll-up into your Windows installation package. Learn more in this walkthrough.
Deploy the ComStore component
- In the ComStore, locate the Windows Update Bugfix Rollup for Windows 7 SP1 x86 and Windows Update Bugfix Rollup for Windows 7 SP1 x64 components.
- Select the component that matches the architecture of the Windows install on the affected endpoint and add the component to your Component Library.
- Deploy the component to your endpoint.
- Wait for the component to install.
- Wait for the next scheduled audit and observe the results. You also have the option to run an audit immediately. Refer to Request Audit in Devices and Request Audit in Device summary.
Install the ComStore component manually
If you would like to install the component manually, or if package deployment is not completing successfully, perform the following steps:
- Download the component package that matches the endpoint's Windows architecture:
- On the affected endpoint, unzip the package you downloaded, and run the included command.bat file as an Administrator.
- The batch file will run and install its bundled Microsoft packages in the same way that the deployed component would.
- Wait for the next scheduled audit, and observe the results. You also have the option to run an audit immediately. Refer to Request Audit in Devices and Request Audit in Device summary.
