Installing the Datto RMM Agent on servers, desktops, and laptops
About the Datto RMM Agent
The Datto RMM Agent is a lightweight application that allows you to establish a remote connection between devices. The Agent allows you to collect information about the customer's network, hardware, and software. It also allows you to remotely support customers, proactively monitor every endpoint, deploy patches, create alerts, schedule maintenance jobs, and more. For more information, refer to The Datto RMM Agent and Agent Browser.
Agent types
There are two Agent types that differ in functionality: Managed and OnDemand. A Managed Agent gives the service provider a lot more functionality. An OnDemand Agent requires the customer to allow remote takeover. Which Agent type is deployed depends upon the site type the device is associated with. Refer to Managed and OnDemand Agents.
Operating systems
Refer to Supported operating systems and Agent requirements.
Agent deployment methods
Refer to the following table to determine the best method for adding a server, desktop, or laptop to your Datto RMM account.
IMPORTANT If you are cloning a device that has the Agent installed, you must first remove it. Refer to Cloning or imaging devices that have Datto RMM installed.
Agent Deployment Method | Description |
---|---|
Replace another RMM software application | Refer to Automated deployment of the Datto RMM Agent using alternative tools. |
Microsoft Azure AD Intune or Microsoft 365 Endpoint Manager | Refer to Deploying the Datto RMM Agent using Microsoft Intune. |
Active Directory GPO | If you are planning on deploying Agents across a Windows Active Directory domain, you can do so via an Immediate Scheduled Task. This will ensure the deployment is touching every device that applies the GPO with minimal manual intervention. Refer to Deploying Windows Agents using Active Directory Group Policy. |
A device on the network already has the Agent installed | If one device on a LAN already has the Datto RMM Agent installed and you have the right permissions, you can deploy the Agent to devices that do not have it across the LAN. This works for both Windows and macOS. Refer to LAN deployment using the Agent Browser (Windows only) and LAN deployment from the web interface. |
No device on the network has the Agent installed | If no device on the network has the Agent installed, you must email the Agent to or manually install the Agent on at least one device. Refer to Downloading the Agent or sharing the Agent installer. |
Services, dependencies, and folders (Windows, macOS, Linux)
Agent data is stored in \Program Files[ (x86)]\CentraStage and \ProgramData\CentraStage.
The following services are installed:
- Datto RMM Agent Service (CagService): For more information, refer to Datto RMM Agent.
- uvnc_service (for remote takeover using VNC or Web Remote): Only installed if VNC is allowed on the device. For more information, refer to VNC Integration.
The following process runs in every user session to show the tray icon and to interact with users: gui.exe.
